Chapter Six

Early November 1877

Deadwood

Her first week in Deadwood passed slowly for Elsie. Barnaby was gone much of the time. Really, he was in the house most of that time, but stayed separate from her. His male patients did not appreciate her presence, not even if she acted as a nurse. Aside from Frankie Manning, all his patients had been men. It left her with a lot of time on her hands.

This day, her eighth in Deadwood, brought a summons which she both dreaded and welcomed. One of the girls at The Gem needed a doctor. She hated entering Swearengen’s den of iniquity. Even so, she was happy to have a patient.

Barnaby had already left. Someone from the Homestake Mine was trapped in a collapse. George Hearst sent for her husband, wanting a doctor on hand since they could hear the man’s screams and knew he was alive. According to Barnaby, Hearst had arrived only a few weeks before she had.

“The man’s pushing hard to get the mine producing. Maybe this accident will slow him down and get him to hopefully use more common sense.” Barnaby grumbled those words as he gathered a few more items to add to his leather bag.

“Shall I go with you?” she had asked. “Maybe this will involve multiple patients.”

He refused, insisting she stay in town. “Probably patients will be coming by needing a doctor.” He gave her an encouraging smile. “That’s you today.”

She had wanted the time, but after her first day in Deadwood, he had stopped hugging or kissing her. Since their wedding day, he never once mentioned them sleeping together or asked if she was ready to take that step in their relationship.

He did ensure that they spent time with each other in the evening. Unless some emergency arose, he sat with her near the stove. They each asked questions about the other’s years growing up. Barnaby said it was a way for them to get to know each other.

“If it was warmer, I would take you for walks. Kind of woo you.” When he said that, he blushed and ducked his head. “This is the best I can do.”

Elsie loved that he understood her need to know him better. Even so, she was stuck in this western town. She was neither a doctor nor a wife. No, that was not true. She was both, except no one allowed her to be either.

Her second chance at getting to know Barnaby Tanner-Marsh was going nowhere. Often, he was not around to share the simple meal she had cooked. Being busy with patients was something she could understand, but she was downright irritated by the
